Speech Title: Capabilities and limitations of 4D antenna arrays in MIMO applications

Abstract: The time modulated antenna array (TMAA) or 4D (four-dimensional) antenna array introduces time as an additional degree of freedom in antenna beamforming. Periodical on/off switching applied to each element of the array leads to generation of sidebands which are suitable for multi-channel transmission and smart beamforming. One of the most significant limitations of the TMAA is the narrow bandwidth, which can be improved with fast switches. In this paper a current state of the art of TMAA prototypes is presented. Moreover, the TMAA with lossless switching network was used as a receiving antenna in 2x2 multiple-input multiple output (MIMO) system. Different scenarios of time modulated beam-scanning MIMO (BS-TM-MIMO) were investigated to improve performance of the system.
